Tabanidae

  March Flies, Horse Flies. A well studied family because of its medical significance. They have large eyes and a strong proboscis and labella. Most Australian species suck blood, but a few are flower feeders. In Europe and N. America the term March fly applies to the Bibionidae.    [243 Aust species]
