Dolichopodidae |
Long-legged Flies. A large family of slender flies, moderate to small in size. Often metallic, and greenish, bluish or bronzy. Some are strongly sexually dimorphic with some bizarre modifications in the male. Mouthparts are predacious, both adult and larva prey on other insects. An unusually rich fauna is found on smooth-barked trees which are used as leks or for mating assemblies. [320 Aust. species] |
