Passalidae

  Black shiny beetles with a narrow pedicle or waist between prothorax and elytra. The elytra are distinctly furrowed. Most occur in Northern Australia where they are important as primary decomposers, breaking down rotting logs into smaller particles.     [40 Aust. species]
