Fireflies. Possess abdominal luminous organs. Males fly after dusk and emit a series of flashes. Females flash but are not known to fly. Synchronished flashing occurs in some species. Males have large bulging eyes and luminous organs on ventrites 5 & 6 while females have the luminous organ on the 5th ventrite. The larva feed on small land snails. [25 Aust. species] |
